By now I am certain you all have heard about the largest Ponzi scheme ever perpetrated by the now infamous Wall Street icon Bernard Madoff. $50 billion (that’s with a b) is the ball park estimate of the amount of losses publicly attributed to this man, so you know he was responsible for stealing more than that. For the most part, the losers were super wealthy already and seeking even more riches(greed?). But in some cases, the losers were hard working mom and pops that had worked years to accumulate a couple of million dollars.
$50,000,000,000. That’s a big number. Madoff has already admitted guilt for the most part. Here’s the kicker; this fool received bail. He spent the holidays at home.
The link to the article below is what prompted this post. Far from the bright lights of NYC in Athens, AL a local drug dealer got creative and started accepting gift cards for product (hey DJ que up “You know It’s Hard Out Here for A Pimp”). This ghetto entrepreneur was subsequently arrested. At the time of his arrest, this obviously low-level dealer had a whopping two grams of crack, 11 Xanax pills $899 dollars and $175 in gift cards. The fact that this was a news story is folly unto itself. This guy is in jail in lieu of a $5000 bond.

Now whose money did Madoff use to post his bail? What’s to stop him from killing himself like one of his business partners recently did? How many people do you know that could steal 1/100 of what this man is accused of stealing and have the luxury of being home for the holidays with his family?
You all have heard the lie about justice being blind. Newsflash… the new age lady justice is Hip Hop all the way; and I ain’t saying she a gold digger, but she definitely ain’t messing with no broke broke….. and she most certainly isn’t blind. As soon as she sees the defendant is poor, uneducated, and black or Latino; she, through her minions in the Black Robes (often they should wear white sheets) ensures the public interest gets the utmost protection and the bail option is either non-existent or unattainable due to its excess.
For many, we don’t even question it anymore. We have grown accustomed to an unjust justice system. It is utterly amazing that to this day, it is the rare Anglo that understood the joy that erupted across the country the day O.J. Simpson was acquitted. White people would be shocked to know that most black people could give a damn about O.J. Simpson. Black people were not cheering that a murderer got off. Black people were happy that for once, the system operated by the rules that were in place even though for once the benefactor was going to be a black man. Further, if the victims would have been black and the crime scene was Compton or Oakland the story would lack all of the historical significance it receives today. Blind lady justice got her sight back again, ask O.J. Do a little research, find out how many accused of more heinous crimes got less or no time at all in sin city than O.J. Simpson. Good make-up call judge.
Lastly, I leave you all with this. About six months ago I was at lunch with a co-worker and we started talking about the fact that one of our mutual friend’s younger brother was kicked out of school for about a week. When she finally told me it was because he got caught distributing cocaine at his well-to-do high school I was shocked (not really). Were the police called into the matter? Nope. Was he expelled? Nope What did the parents have to say? Not a whole hell of a lot. Just sharing with you all these few facts. Most of you have already correctly assumed he was a young white teen. You know this post would not read the same had this young man been his black friend. The tragedy; it doesn’t even make you say hmmm anymore.
Even though the struggle continues, life is good, love mankind.
