Dallas police officer Robert Powell gives new meaning to the phrase, common sense ain’t always so common. A little over a week ago, a man and his family was pulled over for disobeying a traffic signal. The suspect was DWB (Driving While Black) in a late model black Escalade with his hazard lights flashing. His destination was the hospital where his mother-in-law was about to die and he was simply trying to get there for he and his family to say a final goodbye.
Footage of a Dumb@$$ in Action
It is scary to witness the absence of the most base level of courtesy and decency displayed by this man charged to protect and serve. The village of Texas is missing another idiot.
The DWB suspect was running back Ryan Moats of the Houston Texans. Mr. Moats never once referenced who he was or what he did for a living. In a courteous and for the most part, respectful manner, he pleaded with the officer to go inside to be with his family. He was simply a man not a persona, trying to be with his family in a time of need. It was more appalling that even when the officer was advised of the dire situation by the hospital staff, he never relented and simply stated that he was almost done.
Seven and a half years ago I experienced a similar incident in Olympia Fields, IL. I honestly can’t remember whether it was the Homewood, Flossmoor or Olympia Fields police department that pulled me over. It was after midnight, I was DWB in a black Lexus GS300 with hazards flashing. My wife was laying across the back seat experiencing contractions that were definitely not of the Braxton Hicks variety. Out of nowhere, I see flashing lights and I am being pulled over for going through a red light.
I wish I had the officers name so I could put him on blast but I don’t. I do forever have the negative memory. Even with my wife in the back seat moaning in pain, this bastard had the audacity to check my license and registration. Did he extend the courtesy to escort us to the hospital, nope. My apologies for the digression, but its helpful sometimes to let it out.
Admittedly, the Dallas Police Chief made me feel somewhat better about the situation when he stepped up and publicly admonished officer Powell’s actions and suspended him. Hopefully, the next step will be to terminate him for being stuck on stupid.
Episodes like the one Mr. Moats experienced earlier this month and me seven years ago, happen everyday in this country. The players change but too often the consistent theme is a white officer and a black suspect that has to prove he actually is a simple upstanding citizen trying to make it through the experiences life has thrown at him or her that day.
